There are numerous opportunities for members of the Harvard research community to receive formal training in research conduct, safety, and protocol.  Some are required before commencing research in particular areas, while others serve as supplemental education to increase best practices. The following categories outline many of the internal and external training resources available to Harvard researchers, students, and research administrators.

This online program is comprised of multiple basic and species-specific courses for all Harvard researchers.

An online tutorial for human subjects training offered by NIH Office of Extramural Research.


Quality Improvement Program at HSPH

The QIP offers training for research coordinators and investigators and assistance in preparing IRB submissions and consent forms.

Lab Safety


Center for Disease Control and Prevention Laboratory Biosecurity Training

An online tutorial offered by the CDC that covers laboratory biosecurity.


Environmental Health & Safety Training

Offers a variety of laboratory safety courses, including hazardous waste, bloodbourne pathogens, hazard communication, and radiation safety.


Harvard (Cambridge) Lab Safety Course

Provides information on the following topics: the Harvard University Chemical Hygiene Plan, Material Safety Data Sheets, Chemical Information Sheets, and Biosafety/Bloodborne Pathogens (only offered in MCB/OEB sessions). Participants will also learn how to correctly classify and store hazardous waste.

Under the direction and management of the University-wide Research Administration Training Team (URATT), the Research Excellence in Administration Certificate at Harvard (REACH) program is an interactive and engaging cohort-based certificate program specifically designed for Harvard research administrators and other personnel engaged in assisting in the management of sponsored funds.
